Our Vision
Parental Equality is a national, not-for-profit organisation of women and men that seeks to:
-
Support the importance of both mother and father as parents, guardians, carers and custodians of their children and to have the state reflect this position in every aspect of parental and child legislation and its practice.
-
Promote shared responsibility in parenting, both within and outside of marriage.
-
Bring about the expectation that, in the event of marital/relationship breakdown, that Joint Custody is considered the norm and that either parent, in seeking to reduce their involvement with the rearing of their children, should adequately compensate the remaining partner, for alleviating them of their natural parental responsibility.
-
Promote and support thorough, caring, professional and holistic research into the effects on children and their parents, of shared parenting, marital/relationship breakdown, joint custody, absent parents etc.
-
Encourage the elimination of sexist role modelling of parental function in education and in society in general and to promote the view of shared parenting, with interchangeable role playing of both mothers and fathers.
-
Promote impartial and non-judgemental attitudes in situations of broken relationships, except in so for as it affects the welfare of the children.
-
Highlight publicly the damaging effects to parents, in terms of future animosity and mutual mistrust of each other, of the present practice of adversarial family law courts, in operation in Ireland.
-
Advance instead the increased involvement of trained personnel, with appropriate training in psychology, social and negotiation skills and in the process of mediation towards agreed solutions, in the event of broken relationships.
-
Press for regular in-service training of the judiciary to update their knowledge and skills in family law matters and social behavioural trends.
-
Raise funds from
supporters, to enable the group to function and to publicise its objectives.
-
Seek state funding or the operation of the support group and to fund research into shared parenthood and joint custody.
-
Set up a 24 hour, fully staffed helpline, to support parents who have lost contact, or are in fear of being cut off from their children, to maintain a full relationship with their children.
-
Ensure that, following relationship breakdown, children's relationships with both of their extended families are fully maintained.
